  Historical GIS Database of Late Ming Songjian Region

GIS Database of Cotton Textile Industry of the Greater Songjiang Region from the Late Ming to the Mid-Qing is a historical database that portrays the outcome of the research team lead by Professor Billy K.L. So, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Greater Songjian Region refers to the major cotton textile production area of late Ming dynasty. Lines are drawn on detailed images after georeferencing each location, then verified by historical texts and documents in order to grasp the exact location of the townships and cities of the Songjian area. Then, using this information , temples, schools, and commuting routes are reconstructed depicting multiple layers of images showing temples, schools, mercantile routes and harbors, population and taxes. This information can then be used as the fundamental platform for further research on the development of the cotton textile industry.

This is one of the most extensive databases of carefully compiled Chinese historical literature(Academia Scripta),. The collection includes the entire volumes of the Twenty-Five Dynasties Histories, The Thirteen Classics of the Wan Yuan Version 阮刻13經, and over a total of over 20 million characters worth of Taiwan historical literature, 10 million characters of The Taisho Tripitak among others. There are, in total, 134 million characters together, and continues to increase at the rate of 10 million characters a year.

  Query System of Local Histories of China

The Query System of Local Histories of China is a valuable academic resource. It contains information on boundaries of locations, climate, mountains and rivers, produce, and other relevant geographic information. It also contains records on historical humanities, like household registration, population, taxation, and the arts. It is deemed as an encyclopedia to a locale. The rise of the attention of local histories, along with the popularization of the internet, resulted in the need of an electronic query system. Different versions of chorography have already been published here and abroad, but an Internet-based system that allows instant data retrieval is unprecedented. This query system is thus built to fill in this gap. Integrating with CCTS, users can incorporate geographic information when retrieving data from each query.

  'Qing Dynasty Grain Prices Database' of the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica

This database was initiated by Academician Wang Yeh-chien from 1970 to 2008 and contains information and lists of grain prices in the Qing dynasty. The database contains data on the monthly grain prices reported to the Emperor by the governments of each province starting from 1736 during the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911). These reports are called 'Inventory of Grain Prices' (糧價清單) and these numbers are the most reliable, most extensive, and statistically unified data on the economy, and therefore deemed as having a potential for academic research. When combined with the administrative boundary information on CCTS, a multitude of spatial statistics and analysis can be developed, i.e. relationship between grain prices and population distribution can be display on maps. By overlapping different GIS layers , other spatial issues, like population, production, disaster, traffic, and township or municipality can also be analyzed.

  Qing Demography History – Lower Yanzi Valley in Mid-Qing Database

Qing Demography History – Lower Yangzi Valley in Mid-Qing concerns the research project on the demography history of the lower Yangzi. Analysis and charts and graphs are created by Dr. Mark Elvin based on the statistics provided by Dr. Josephine Fox. The content of the project can be seen and statistics and documents are available for download. A portion of the research has been integrated with CCTS spatial data.

Under the sponsorship of the National Science Council, Prof. Timothy D. Baker the database of the Urban-Suburban Plans of Han and Tang Chang'an is constructed. Through old maps and archaeological discoveries and verification through historical texts, the network of roads, rivers, and sites can be reconstructed. This database is built with the help of Academia Sinica.
